Heaven Forbids

March, 1998

In addition to being the world's ugliest book cover (can I say that?) Heaven Forbids is not your usual romance.

It is my opinion that writers must possess a depth of compassion for humanity, else they could never do justice to their characters.

Heaven Forbids is not a quick little romp through history.  It will not be everyone's cup of tea.  It is a strong and passionate story about two people who should have known better, but who fell in love despite circumstances, the times, and themselves.  Kathryn is not a typical heroine.  She is human and flawed and made some terrible decisions.  She and Hugh will both have to live with the consequences of one of them for the rest of their lives.  Can their love overcome their sense of culpability?

The story of Heaven Forbids takes place in the northern reaches of Scotland, in 1744.  Anyone who knows their history will tell you that it was not an easy time in the Highlands.  But Nenverness is an enchanted place, filled with myth and promise.

But I still think it is the most hideous cover.  There are green things growing out of the picture frame.  And what, exactly, are they doing?  (Don't tell me just kissing, either. <g>)

1999 RT Reviewer's Choice Nominee - Most Innovative Historical Romance

1999 RITA Finalist

Heaven Forbids -  Karen Ranney's powerful pros and strong story line, propelled by unforgettable characters, turn Heaven Forbids into an out of the ordinary breed. Perhaps not for every one -- but for those who crave the different, the powerful, and the imaginative -- this is one book that will become a treasure.  4-1/2 Stars - Exceptional - Romantic Times, 2/98

Karen Ranney's Heaven Forbids comes as close to x-rated as romances get. This story has all the usual political turmoil and romantic complications, but what you'll remember is what went on in the laboratory. Detroit Free Press, 4/98  (Love this review.  Now, if they could only have stood in a crowded mall and shouted this outside a bookstore...)
